Here’s the text from the 2/24/1995 game program:
This year’s CSU Sacramento Men’s Volleyball squad has the talent and ability to be one of the best ever at Sacramento State. The Hornets Men’s Volleyball program has gained respect across the country with 4 consecutive finishes of 5th place or better in the National Tournament. This year’s team has its sights set on bringing the National Championship trophy to Sacramento.
Maturity and experience are two things this CSUS team does not lack. With 3 graduate students returning for their final year of eligibility, as well as having 5 seniors on the squad, this year’s team is deep in both ability and experience. 2-time All-American Mark Harrison, 1994 All-American Carl Kelley, and All-American transfer Bob Bennett lead a Hornet squad that has plenty of size and speed. Ruben Volta returns after a year off to provide leadership from the setting position. All in all, CSUS is in a position to challenge for the National Club Championship in Minneapolis this April.
Update since last home match against UC Davis: CSUS defeated UCD in three close games. The hornets traveled to Nevada and Santa Clara. CSUS was victorious in both matches while losing one game in each match. Though, not a spotless record the Hornets have upped their match record to 23-2. Those 2 losses were to Division 1 teams in the UC Santa Barbara Invitational Volleyball Tournament. We lost to UCSB 14-16, 12-15. CSUS never woke up for the morning match against Stanford. The Hornets finished a great place of 5th behind 1st BYU, 2nd Stanford, 3rd UCLA, and 4th UCSB. The Hornets did upset Rutgers, CSU Northridge, CSU Long Beach, and beat Pepperdine to take 5th place.
Friday’s match will see a smaller team without #17 Dave Berglund who twisted his ankle in practice last week. #18 Carl Kelley is also recovering from the flu. Both should be back soon.
